Claude can search and send Gmail emails, manage Google Calendar events, and search and save Google Drive files through its native Google Workspace connectors. (Anthropic help)

Setup difficulty
3 of 5 for a first-timer
Our grade: three app connections to approve, with an owner or administrator setting possible. How we grade it.
This guide is for a Canadian small business owner or office manager connecting an app to Claude for the first time. Work through one connection before adding the others. threndle.ai is an independent AI automation agency.
Key takeaways
- Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive connectors are available to all Claude users, including on Claude Desktop. (Anthropic help)
- By default, Claude asks for approval before sending, replying to or forwarding a Gmail email. (Anthropic help)
- Start with a search or summary, compare it with the original, then try one change you can review.
What this takes, honestly
- You authenticate directly with your Google account before using these connectors. (Anthropic help)
- On Claude Team or Enterprise, an Owner or Primary Owner must enable the connectors before you can connect your account. (Anthropic help)
- If Google Workspace blocks the connection, your administrator may need to allow Claude as a trusted application. (Anthropic help)
- Keep this guide open, read each permission request, and stop if you need the account owner to decide.
What are the three words you will see?
- A connector is a link that lets Claude read information or take actions in another app. (Anthropic help)
- OAuth sign-in means signing in to your Google account and approving the app's requested access. (Google account help)
- Permissions are the level of access an app has and the actions it can take with your Google data. (Google account help)

How do you connect Gmail, Calendar and Drive to Claude?
Use Claude on the web or Claude Desktop for this walkthrough. Follow Anthropic's menu names below, and connect only the apps you want to use.
- Open Customize > Connectors in Claude, then click the + button next to Connectors. (Anthropic help)
- Select the connector you want to add and review its description and capabilities. (Anthropic help)
- Click Connect or Install and follow the authentication prompts to grant access to your account. (Anthropic help)
- Configure the requested settings or permissions as needed. (Anthropic help)
- In your chat, click +, hover over Connectors, and toggle on the services you want to use. (Anthropic help)
Repeat the connection steps for Gmail, Google Calendar and Google Drive as needed. Select the Google account whose work you want to use, and review its permission screen before approving.
On Team and Enterprise, the owner goes to Organization settings > Connectors, clicks Browse connectors, selects the connector and clicks Add to your team. (Anthropic help)
How do you add a Drive document to a chat?
Click the plus sign in the chat, select Add from Google Drive, then search your recent documents or paste the document URL. (Anthropic help)
A URL is the web address you copy from your browser. Try a document you already know, so you can compare the answer with its contents.
Which jobs should you try first?
Use these as practice requests. Read-only means asking for information without changing the source app. Keep the scope small and check the result.
- Read Gmail. Ask: "Find the email thread from our customer about the delivery date. Summarize it and link to the original. Do not send or change anything." Open the email and compare.
- Read Calendar. Ask: "Show my meetings tomorrow with their times. Do not change any events." Check the dates and time zone in Google Calendar.
- Read Drive. Add a Google Doc you know and ask for a summary. Check the summary against the document.
- Write, with review. Ask Claude to prepare one Gmail reply. Read the recipient, subject and full message before approving the send, then check Gmail.
Claude's connector responses include citations to the emails, events or documents used, with links to originals when available. (Anthropic help)
Is it safe to connect your work?

Decide which work you want Claude to access before connecting it. Review the permissions with whoever is responsible for your business accounts.
Google does not share your Google account password with apps from other developers. (Google account help)
Claude can only access data for the Google account you connected and cannot access information outside your existing Google Workspace permissions. (Anthropic help)
Connector data is stored on Anthropic servers with its associated chat; deleting the chat deletes that retrieved data. (Anthropic help)
Connector data is encrypted while stored and while being transferred. (Anthropic help)
Anthropic does not train its models on Gmail, Drive or Calendar connector data. (Anthropic help)
On consumer plans, if you allow model training, pasted Google content or Claude responses containing specific connector information may be used to improve models. (Anthropic help)
On Team and Enterprise, owners decide whether members can allow certain actions to run without asking for approval each time. (Anthropic help)
Tool permissions offer Always allow, Needs approval and Blocked choices. (Anthropic help)
For your first write, keep Needs approval and read the proposed action before accepting it.
What does it cost?
These Google Workspace connectors are available to all Claude users, so a paid Claude plan is not required just to connect them. (Anthropic help)
Choose a paid plan only if its other features fit your work. For our setup pricing, see the homepage FAQ.
What if it does not work?
- If a connector does not respond, check your internet connection, your active Google account and its permission requirements. (Anthropic help)
- To reconnect, go to Customize > Connectors, open your Google connector, click Disconnect and confirm Disconnect; the next Google Workspace request takes you back to Google to sign in. (Anthropic help)
- If that still fails, open your Google account connections, select Claude and choose Delete all connections. (Anthropic help)
- For an Access blocked message, your Workspace administrator can go to Security > Access and data control > API controls > Manage third-party app access, choose Add app, then OAuth App Name, search Claude and set it as Trusted. (Anthropic help)
Ask your administrator to review that access decision. If you want help connecting your accounts and checking the first job, book a meeting with threndle.ai.
Where does it stop?
- Gmail provides attachment details, but not the attachment contents. (Anthropic help)
- When reading a Drive file, Claude extracts text and does not process images embedded in documents. (Anthropic help)
- Adding Drive files to project Files is available only in private projects, not shared projects. (Anthropic help)
- Live editing of Docs, Sheets and Slides is a beta feature with separate connectors from Google Drive. (Anthropic help)
Treat this guide as a first connection and review exercise. Compare every answer or change with the original app before relying on it.
How do we grade setup difficulty?
We grade every how-to from the side of someone who has never connected an app to Claude.
- One sign-in. Click a button and approve.
- Two sign-ins. Nothing to type or paste.
- Several sign-ins. A few permission screens to approve, or an owner who has to switch something on.
- A second service. You sign up for a go-between service, paste its web address into Claude's settings as a custom connector, and expect some troubleshooting.
- Developer work. Code, a server or an API to set up.
This guide scores 3: you approve three app connections, and an owner or administrator may need to switch on access. If you connect only one app on your own account, the task is simpler.
